The way I do it is using firefox. I get an add-on called ‘downloadHelper’ which allows you to download any form of media found on any website in just about any format.
After that I convert it using ‘Free FLV Converter’ (http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html). I don’t know what format sony vegas 9 uses, but this can easily be found out. simply go to import video and see what formats are available in the video format drop-down box.
If you don’t have firefox you can also use the FLV converter to download directly off of youtube. The only thing is that it is in no way straightforward and is much, much simpler to use the firefox add-on.

To save a video from youtube, use a site like http://www.keepvid.com to save the file. It’ll save as an FLV file. To convert it to whatever format you need, go to:http://www.formatoz.com/

You didn’t say what you’re using exactly. Vegas Pro only goes up to version 8, but I saw that Movie Studio and Movie Studio Platinum are at version 9. Not sure which one you’re using, but either way, Sony’s site doesn’t make it too easy to find out what file types are supported. I’m sure it’s there, but it seems so out of the way to locate that information. Anyway, when you install FormatFactory, you just select what file you want to convert (it’ll be the FLV video from youtube) and select the format you want to convert it to. And you’re all set.
